Why intake must lead exhaust

Exhaust vents get the attention because they're visible from the street — ridge vent, box vents, sometimes a powered fan. What actually determines whether that exhaust works is something almost nobody notices from the ground: how much air is allowed in low on the roof to replace what the exhaust is pulling out. An exhaust vent doesn't create airflow on its own. It creates a pressure difference, and that difference only moves air the way it's supposed to if there's somewhere for replacement air to enter.

When intake is undersized relative to exhaust, the exhaust vents don't stop pulling — they just start pulling from wherever air is available instead of from the soffit the way the design intended. That can mean drawing conditioned air up from the living space through ceiling gaps and can-light housings, or it can mean one exhaust vent pulling makeup air back in through a nearby exhaust vent, which defeats the point of having two of them. Either way, the attic stops getting the clean low-to-high sweep of outside air a balanced system is designed to produce.

ARMA's guidance on this is specific rather than a rule of thumb split evenly down the middle: intake should supply roughly 50 to 60 percent of a system's total net free area, exhaust the remaining 40 to 50 percent, and intake should never be allowed to fall below exhaust. That asymmetry is deliberate — intake is the side that has to win the arithmetic, not tie it, because an exhaust-heavy system is the one that starts drawing air back through itself.

This isn't a cosmetic distinction. An attic that isn't actually being flushed the way its vent count suggests runs warmer and wetter than it should through the parts of the year that matter most, which is part of what drives the freeze-thaw damage covered on our roof ventilation repair page — that page picks up exactly this problem on a system that's already built but not balanced correctly.

Calculating vent area

Sizing starts with the attic's square footage and the specific intake and exhaust products being used, since net free area — the actual open area air can pass through, not the physical size of the vent — is rated per product, per linear or per unit measure, by the manufacturer. That rated number is what the calculation actually works from, not the vent's visible dimensions, since a wider-looking vent with a lot of screening or baffling can move less air than a narrower one that's more open.

Once the total net free area a system needs is established for a given attic, that total gets split using the intake-leads-exhaust ratio rather than divided evenly. In practice that means selecting enough soffit vent product, spread along the full eave rather than concentrated at one end, to hit the intake share of the total — and enough ridge or other exhaust product to hit the remainder, without exceeding what intake can supply.

Roof geometry complicates the arithmetic on plenty of houses. A hip roof has less ridge length to work with than a simple gable, which limits how much exhaust a ridge vent alone can provide and sometimes pushes part of the exhaust load onto box vents instead. A cathedral or vaulted section with no real attic space above it needs its own dedicated rafter-bay venting path, calculated separately from the main attic rather than lumped into the same total.

None of this is a calculation worth guessing at from the ground. Getting the actual roof geometry, the attic's real square footage, and the rated performance of the specific products being installed into the same equation is what separates a system that's balanced on paper from one that just looks like it has enough vents.

Intake at the soffit, exhaust at the ridge

The physical layout follows the same logic as the arithmetic: cool air has to enter low and warm air has to leave high, or the attic doesn't get swept the way the design assumes. Soffit vents sit at the eave, the lowest point of the roof system, and feed outside air into the attic space continuously along the whole run rather than at a single opening. Ridge vent sits at the peak, where warm, moist air naturally wants to rise and exit if it's given a clear path out.

Continuous distribution matters as much as total area. A soffit with plenty of net free area concentrated at one end of a long eave doesn't ventilate the far end of that same attic nearly as well as the same total area spread evenly along the whole run, since the air entering has to actually reach every rafter bay, not just the ones closest to the opening. A blocked or painted-over soffit vent anywhere along that run creates a dead zone behind it even if the rest of the system is sized correctly — a failure mode covered in more depth on the repair side of this system rather than here.

The soffit-to-ridge path only stays open if nothing in the attic itself is blocking it. Insulation pushed too far toward the eave, without a baffle holding a clear channel above it, can seal off the exact opening the soffit vents were installed to provide — which is why intake design and insulation work have to be coordinated rather than treated as separate projects. What type of insulation are they proposing and why, not just a price — loose-fill, batt and spray foam each suit different attic shapes and existing conditions differently. And is air sealing included as its own line item, or assumed to already be handled?
