The finished result reads as a heat map laid directly over the roof's actual layout — warmer zones outlined against a cooler field, matched carefully against drain locations, seams, and any known penetrations so the resulting pattern can be interpreted in useful context rather than read as an abstract image on its own. For instance, a warm zone sitting right at a drain often tells a different story than the same shape sitting in the middle of an open field, even though both would look fairly similar as a raw, uninterpreted thermal image on their own.

A roof absorbs solar heat all day, and dry and wet insulation absorb and hold that heat differently. Weather in the days leading up to the scan matters as much as the timing on the night itself. A roof needs a reasonable stretch of sun to charge that thermal contrast in the first place, so a run of several overcast, low-sun days going into a scheduled scan can flatten the readings before the crew even gets on the roof, independent of how much moisture is actually present underneath the membrane.
