Why trusses cannot be field-modified
A rafter roof is built from individual members that each carry their own share of the load fairly independently. A truss roof is a different kind of structure entirely — a truss is a triangulated assembly of top chords, a bottom chord, and web members, engineered as a single system where the load path runs through every piece in a specific, calculated way. Remove or weaken one member, and the load that member was carrying doesn't disappear; it has to go somewhere else in the assembly that wasn't sized to take it.
That's the reason a truss can't be cut, drilled, or notched in the field the way a rafter sometimes can. A hole cut for a duct run, a web member removed to open up attic storage space, or a chord notched to make room for a fixture might look harmless the day it's done — the roof doesn't sag immediately, nothing visibly changes. Engineered repair versus improvisation
A proper truss repair starts with identifying which specific members are compromised and what load path they were part of, then designing a fix — sistering a new member alongside a damaged one, replacing a failed connector plate with hardware rated for that joint, or adding supplemental framing at a specific point — sized to restore the truss's original design capacity rather than just make the visible damage disappear.
An improvised fix skips that step. Nailing a board across a cracked chord, or bracing a sagging joint with whatever lumber is on hand, can look like a repair and even stop the immediate movement, without actually restoring the load path the original design relied on. The truss can appear stable for years under normal conditions and still be carrying less capacity than it was built with, which only becomes obvious under an unusually heavy load — exactly the situation a repair is supposed to guard against.
